Things to Know About Taihu (excluding political aspect)

Environmental degradation is the deterioration of the environment through depletion of resources such as air, water and soil; the destruction of ecosystems and the extinction of wildlife.

THE SITUATION:
Eutrophication (adding of chemicals) of Taihu lake since the 1980s has caused an algae bloom last May, rendering tap water undrinkable for more than 1 million Wuxi citizens of Jiangsu Province. About 30 mil people in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces and Shanghai rely on Taihu as a drinking water source.

SOLUTIONS:
A total of 243 projects will be constructed to treat wastewater and garbage, to recover ecological environment around the lake, to remove silt, and to reduce pollution from farming and ships, which will cost 2.6 billion U.S. dollars, according to an official with the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA).

EFFECTS:
The amount of discharged chemical oxygen demand (COD), a major industrial pollutant, has been greatly reduced since pollution control programs were kicked off in 1998. However, nitrogen and phosphorus pollution due to abuse of fertilizer and pesticide, as well as untreated waste from the poultry and livestock industry, has yet to be alleviated. To make the situation worse, about 10 percent of factories, mainly small chemical plants and paper mills, were found to be ignoring the ban to discharge dirty water into the lake.

POSSIBLE ARGUMENTS:
- "Natural disaster" is inaccurate as the disaster is probably man-made.
- We need to clean up Taihu ASAP, but we also need to reflect on the management of the lake.
- Government departments need to decide whether they are only going to impose a fine on these polluting businesses, or genuinely supervise their behavior and urge improvements.
- Industries that violate the environmental laws must now tell us if they have truly reformed, and if they can really guarantee the safety of the local environment.
- Urge both government and industry to publicize information about water pollution, and allow residents who need clean water to take action and help monitor polluters in their own communities.
